Þorleifur hreimur Ketilsson

Þorleifur hreimur Ketilsson (Thorleifur, 1222 - 1289) was a medieval and lagman caudillo (lögsögumaður) from Iceland in the 13th century. Son of the lagman Ketill Þorláksson, succeeded his father in office in 1263. He belonged to the family clan of the Haukdælir. He was the nephew of the jarl Gissur Þorvaldsson, whom he accompanied to visit Norway in 1246 and Rome in 1249. In 1253 he and his ten-year-old son, Þorlákur, escaped the tragedy of Flugumýrarbrenna.

With Þorleifur the role of lögsögumaður was already in decline and was the only one in all history to have held his position on three occasions. The first between 1263 and 1266, the second in 1268 and the third in 1271. However there are some doubts as some sources cite Sigurður Þorvaldsson as lagman in 1266, but other sources lengthen the functions of Þorleifur for four years and is not known with certainty the time that Sigurður played his.

Þorleifur was in fact the last Icelander to play lagman after the annexation of Iceland to the Norwegian crown and the application of Gamli sáttmáli. Bibliography
