Joris Veltman


Joris Andre Veltman (* 1971) is a Dutch molecular and human geneticist. He is a professor of translational genetics in the Medical Faculty of the Radboud University of Nijmegen and in the Medical Faculty of the University of Maastricht.

In 2008, he became a professor at the Department of Human Genetics at the Medical University in Nijmegen. He received a full professorship in 2013 and became a professor in Maastricht in 2014.

In 2016 he and Han Brunner received the King Faisal Prize in Medicine for the development of Next Generation Sequencing and its application in clinical practice. They developed new microarray-based DNA analysis methods for the identification of genes that are relevant to disease, especially in hereditary diseases with intellectual disabilities (in this area, he has been investigating the relationship between genotype and phenotype with his group for a long time), but also in cystic liver (PCLD) , male sterility, and congenital metabolic disorders.
