In the course of the twentieth century Charnego came from a non-Catalan-speaking region of Spaniards or their descendants in Catalonia, mostly from Castile, Extremadura or Andalusia. The term, originally termed as pejorative as a foreign term, became the answering word, H. the original pejorative alien designation is now proudly used as a self-designation. According to the Diccionario de la Lengua EspaƱola, the term charnego is due to the Catalan xarnego, which in turn comes from the Castilian lucharniego. The perro lucharniego is the dog who is trained to hunt at night. This is etymologically obscured by the fact that it is not easy to see that lucharniego actually comes from nocharniego (meaning "by night") Famous Charnegos edit source text
