In media research, readership research provides a systematic sampling of the structure of the readers of newspapers and magazines, their reading habits and range of print media.

Two criteria that are necessary for reading research are the collection of the reader's circle (readers who read or browse through the media at what intervals) and the fluctuation of the readership. Furthermore, the number of readers per output and their reading behavior on the copy and its individual pages are determined. These include the reading time and reading frequency as well as the reading intensity and the interest of the reader. EditPropertytext
Readership is used by the editorial staff to review the acceptance of the editorial offer and, if necessary, to adapt the offer to the needs of the readership. Basic information is also provided for advertising within print media or for the application of print media. Edit source code
A variety of methods are used to investigate the reading behavior. The "classical" methods are based on a survey of the readership. The disadvantage of this method is that the actual reading behavior is not reproduced but only the behavior articulated by the persons interviewed. According to experience, however, respondents can not reproduce their reading behavior inadequately. This is due to the fact that the reading act is in many cases an unconscious, customary process, to which the readers surveyed can only very badly remember. This means that all survey methods have a more or less limited use for editing a newspaper or magazine.
Modern methods are trying to capture the reading behavior without post-reading readers - For example by means of an eye tracking camera. In this method, the reader's eye movements during the reading act are recorded by a camera and projected onto the newspaper so that it can be determined subsequently what the reader has actually read in the newspaper. The disadvantages of this method lie in the great technical effort to collect and evaluate the reading behavior, the lack of representativeness of the results for the entire readership as a result of small sample numbers and possible distortions due to the laboratory situation of the observed readers.
The most modern method for reading the reading behavior is Readerscan. In this method, the reading behavior is recorded by means of a scanning operation during the reading clock. The analysis of the data is fully electronic so that the data obtained from the reading behavior are available to the editorial staff just a few hours after the publication of the newspaper. The disadvantage of the method lies in the fact that the actual reading can be recorded, but only the limited flight of pages with the eyes. Edit source text
