The United States Mint (abbreviated as US Mint) or the United States Mint is the agency that produces the currency that is currently in circulation in the United States. The main facilities of US Mint are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as it was the first center set up under the Constitution, when that city was the capital of the United States. It also operates coin manufacturing centers in Denver, San Francisco and West Point, New York and a deposit of gold coins at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
The United States Mint was created on April 2, 1792 by the United States Congress under the 1792 Currency Act. The first person to be named director was David Rittenhouse.
It has more than 1,845 employees (according to 2006 data) and its current director is Edmund C. Moy.
