Rudolf Hiestand (born August 30, 1933 in Zurich) is a historian, a diplomat.

Rudolf Hiestand was promoted in 1958 at the University of Zurich with a study on Byzantium and the Regnum Italicum. He qualified in the chair of Hans Eberhard Mayer at the University of Kiel in 1972. Until 1998, he was holder of the Chair for Medieval History at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. From 1987 to 2005 he was secretary of the Pius Foundation for Papsturkundenforschung.

He is a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen. He also belongs to the German Commission for the processing of the Regesta Imperii. Edit source text
