South Park (Oxford)

South Park with views of Oxford

The South Park is a park in the south of the English city of Oxford. The 20 hectare site is situated on a hill; next to the directly adjacent Headington Hill Park is the largest park in the city. South Park consists largely of an open space, allowing you to look over the entire medieval old town of Oxford.

There are numerous events in the park itself: the annual parade of the Lord Mayor, as well as the annual fireworks of the Oxford Round Table. Because of its view the park served as a location for numerous film and television productions, which were shot in Oxford, as well as the open-air offer for concerts.

The country was until 1939 private property of the family Morell, which also had its seat on it. In 1939, the Oxford Preservation Trust acquired the park and handed it over to Oxford in 1951. Directly across from South Park is the Headington Hill Park, both of which are separated by the main road from Oxford to Headington and later London.

From Oxford, the band Radiohead organized a mini-festival in the park on the occasion of the album release of Amnesiac on July 7, 2001. In addition to Radiohead played Beck, Sigur Rós, Supergrass and Humphrey Lyttelton. There were more than 40,000 people - the biggest crowd ever seen in the park. Weblinks / Sources Edit sourcetext
