Matteo Maruffo
Matteo Maruffo (Genoa, Italy, circa 1350) was a Genoese admiral who played a very important role in the battle of Chioggia, when he commanded a squadron intended to reinforce the city, which was under siege by the Venetians. In Genoa it is considered one of its naval heroes. The arrival of the fleet of Matteo Maruffo to Chioggia, 14 of May of 1380, supposed a great relief between the troops that were defending the position. However, this occurred with some delay, caused by the confrontation with an enemy squadron, which managed to win after an impetuous counter-offensive, managing to capture five Venetian galleys and numerous troops.
The fleet soon arrived in the vicinity of the island of Brondolo, already in Chioggia. By that time the Venetians had already recovered much of the island, reason why Marruffo was forced to remain with its ships in a port fortified from which to reject the enemy skirmishes. After more than a month defending the city, Maruffo had to yield and, on June 24, the Genoese of Chioggia surrendered.
