Encoded Archival Description (EAD) is a documentary XML standard for describing archival finding aids. Responsible for the definition of EAD is the Technical Subcommittee for Encoded Archival Description of the Society of American Archivists together with the Library of Congress. A first version was developed in 1995 at the University of California, Berkeley in the form of a document type definition (DTD) for SGML. The current version (EAD3) was released in August 2015.
