Temples (ΤΕΜΠΛΟΣ) is a locality of Cyprus that is very close to Kyrenia, in the area of the island controlled by the de facto state of the Turkish Republic of the North of Cyprus. Since 1975 it is called by the Turks Zeytinlik. The village is located on the north slope of the Pentadáctilos mountains. Generally the origin of the name of the town is attributed to the fact that that locality served as headquarters of the Knights Templar at the end of the XI century and beginnings of the XII. Demographics
According to a census conducted in 2006, the population of Temples is 513 people who mostly descend from their original inhabitants. The Ottoman census of 1831 recorded an original population of 34, all Turkish Cypriot Muslims among the male population (this census did not count females). The population growth was slow, but gradually a Greek Greek Cypriot minority was added, which in 1960 was made up of 61 people out of a total of 161, a number that could however be somewhat bulky since in this case a part of the population was included of Agios Georgios (Cyprus) in the population records of Temples.
The Greek Cypriot population was displaced between 1960 and 1973. From 1964, Temples was part of the Turkish Cypriot enclave of Nicosia and later hosted many displaced Turkish Cypriots. Recently, particularly in the last decade, the population has been increased by the arrival of Turkish Cypriots from Nicosia, as well as some returnees from the UK and other European countries who have also acquired homes there.
