Sea of clouds

Sea of clouds on the island of Tenerife.

A sea of clouds is a horizontal accumulation of stratocumulus at low altitudes (approximately between 500 and 1,500 m), caused by sea-borne winds in the lower sector. This explains the phenomenon of thermal inversion, by which higher temperatures are registered above the elevation of 1,500 m than in the lower section covered by the sea of clouds. At certain times and in certain periods of the day, the sea of clouds acquires a slightly bluish tonality, reason that the less accustomed hikers confuse it with the sea and suppose, erroneously, that they are at an altitude inferior to the real one .
