Peterson began his career as an art director and set designer in the film industry of Hollywood at the black and white film Arizona (1940). Already for this debut film, a western directed by Wesley Ruggles with Jean Arthur, William Holden and Warren William in the main roles, he was nominated for the Oscar for the best scene picture together with Lionel Banks
