Great Victoria Desert

The Great Victoria Desert is an inhospitable, arid and sparsely populated ecoregion of southern Australia. It is located between the states of South Australia and Western Australia and presents a large number of small sand dunes, extensive grasslands and saltwater lakes. It extends along 700 km of width (from East to West) and an area of ​​424,400 km ². Storms are relatively common in the Great Victoria Desert, averaging around 200-250 mm per year. The daytime temperatures in summer are around 32-40 ° C. In winter the temperatures happen to be 18-23 ° C, so it never snows in the desert.

The small population that inhabits this region is of several groups of Australian aborigines, mainly the Kogara and the Mirning.

In 1875, British explorer Ernest Giles became the first European to cross the desert, which he later named as the Great Victoria Desert in honor of Queen Victoria of England.
