Flag of North Ossetia-Alania
Flag of North Ossetia-Alania.
The flag of North Ossetia-Alania consists of three horizontal stripes: the upper, white; the central, red; and the lower, yellow. These colors represent, respectively, moral purity, martial courage and, finally, health and prosperity. The flag also represents the old social structure of North Ossetia-Alania, which was divided into three groups: aristocracy of military court, clergy and plain people. The flag of South Ossetia has the same colors, but with a small proportional variant, because it is somewhat narrower. During the Soviet Union, North Ossetia-Alania had a predominantly red flag with a blue stripe on the left, the sickle and hammer, and the words "North Ossetia ASSR" in both Russian and Ossetian. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, that flag was replaced by the current one, which was officially adopted on October 2, 1991.
