Thraex

A thraex or gladiator Thrace was a type of gladiator of the old Rome, so called because its armament imitated that of the Thracians, with a small rectangular shield called formula (of about 60 x 65 cm) and a very short sword with the slightly curved edge called sica (not very different from a small version of the dacia falx) whose purpose was mainly to attack the back devoid of armor of his opponent. The rest of his armor was composed of greaves (necessary for the small size of the shield), a protection for the arm and shoulder of the sword, a protective belt on linen clothes, and a helmet with plume, visor, and a crest. The thraex and hoplomachus (with similar equipment to a Greek hoplite) were usually pitted against the murmur, a gladiator equipped as a Roman legionnaire, making a depiction of historical wars between Romans and enemies of other distant geographical areas.
