The term memory memory was coined by Jan Assmann and Aleida Assmann. It is based on the definition of cultural memory as a social memory that originates not only in, but above all, between people (see Maurice Halbwachs). The image of the past is shaped in the present.
The memory memory, unlike the function memory, describes a pool of traditions that are not needed in today, but which can be accessed. The memory memory is latent; its holdings have no direct relation to the present, they are autonomous and unstructured. The memory memory is thus anachron. It describes, so to speak, the horizon of all knowledge, of all the collected texts, patterns of action, etc.
