Bassanello

Bassanello

The bassanello is an encapsulated double-barreled wood wind instrument, similar in form to the bassoon, which was used during the Renaissance. It is believed to have been invented by Italian composer Giovanni Bassano around 1601. It was described in 1619 by Michael Praetorius in his work Syntagma musicum.

The most relevant characteristic of bassanello was that its tongue was enclosed in a capsule. No instrument of the time is preserved, so it is only known for illustrations and written descriptions.
