José Estruch Martínez


Antonio José Estruch Martínez (Sant Joan de l'Ennova February 9, 1835-La Pobla Llarga 1907) was a Valencian painter of the 19th century, who was the teacher of Joaquín Sorolla.

He was the third of nine brothers and was born in the so-called "Castell" house and before his 15th birthday, he painted "Santa Úrsula". He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in San Carlos although later he traveled to Paris where he met artists from the size of Vincent Van Gogh or Toulouse-Lautrec. Its pictorial production is wide, emphasizing the portrait, the daily scenes and the religious painting. His religious work was compared to that of Jose de Ribera or Juan de Juanes. He usually made drawings and inscriptions on the back of his works, leaving historical and documentary information. He was a remarkable muralist of cartoons. Sources
