Barber of monkeys and cats

Barber of monkeys and cats is a satirical painting by a follower of the Flemish painter David Teniers the Younger in the seventeenth century. This work is relevant because it uses monkeys and cats as allegory of power relations in Flanders during the time. In painting, the monkeys represent the economic power of the Flanders region over the French - retreated as cats, whose mustaches are trimmed to lose their sense of orientation. The barbershop was one of the favorite allegories of David Teniers the Younger, along with the tavern, as is shown also in the table Tavern of monkeys. Barbería de monos y gatos is part of the collection of the Soumaya Museum in Mexico City.
