Maktum bin Buti (Arabic: مكتوم بن بطي, DMG Maktūm ibn Buṭī; † 1852) was the founder and first ruler of the Sheikhdom of Dubai.

He left Abu Dhabi with some 800 members of the tribe of Al Bu Falasah, a branch of Bani Yas, to settle in Dubai. At that time, like most settlements, Dubai was a small town. He founded the Scheichtum Dubai on June 9, 1833, which belonged to Abu Dhabi until then. At the beginning of his term of office, he was very young, but it is evident from historical records that he was courageous and skilled in mastering all political and economic hurdles during the founding of the New Sheikdom. Under his rule, the Treaty of Eternal Peace at Sea and the prohibition of slavery were concluded with the British in 1835 and 1853 respectively. Thus the coast got its name Trucial Coast and became the protectorate area of Great Britain. He pushed back the prevailing piracy and thus provided for a flourishing sea trade. The pearl trade became under its rule the main source of income Dubai.

Until his death in 1852 he was one of the most respected and influential persons of the armistice coast on the Persian Gulf. His successor as ruler of Dubai was his brother Sheikh Said bin Buti. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Emire of Dubai
