Wilber Morris


Wilber Morris (* 27. November 1937 in Los Angeles als Wilbur Morris; † 8. August 2002 in Livingston (New Jersey)) war ein US-amerikanischer Jazzbassist und Bandleader.

Morris played drums as a child. In 1954 he went to the US Air Force, where he stayed until 1962 and changed to the double bass. During this time he played in San Francisco with musicians like Pharoah Sanders or Sonny Simmons. Subsequently, he returned to his birthplace, where he worked with Horace Tapscott and Arthur Blythe. In 1978 he moved to New York where he played with Billy Bang and David Murray (especially in his octet). In his own trio, Dennis Charles and saxophonist Charles Tyler (later replaced by Murray) played. In 1983 the album "Wilber Force" was created on the DIW label. He later worked with Joe McPhee, Charles Gayle, Butch Morris, John Fischer, Theo Jörgensmann, Alfred Harth, Claude Lawrence, William Parker, Alan Silva, Burton Greene and Rashied Ali. In 2000, he released the duo album "Drumstring Thing" with the drummer Reggie Nicholson on the CIMP label. In 1996, he founded the BMC trio together with Thomas Borgmann and Dennis Charles. In 1998, after the death of Charles, the BMN trio with Reggie Nicholson became drums. The BMC / BMN trio has recorded six CDs, one LP and two double LPs.
