Jonathan Schaeffer (* 1957, Toronto, Ontario) is a professor of computer science at the University of Alberta, Canada. He is a worldwide recognized authority for artificial intelligence algorithms for chess, checkers, poker and other computer games. In 2007, he was appointed a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
Schaeffer is the main author of the computer program Chinook, which has been the world's most powerful lady program since the 1990s. In April 2007, Schaeffer and his co-workers were able to solve the lady's game with computer assistance completely (starting from the start of the game, not from any game) and prove that the player is undecided when the game is not played. In addition to numerous scientific publications, Schaeffer is author of the book One Jump Ahead, in which he describes his efforts in the 1990s to develop a computer program that should defeat Marion Tinsley.
