Anonymous Was A Woman

Anonymous What A Woman is an American art award.

The art prize Anonymous What A Woman exists since 1996. It is awarded to women over 40, who are established in the art world and are to be encouraged with the price to continue their careers. Lauren Katzowitz Shenfield is the director of the program.

With the prize, which is endowed with $ 25,000, 10 artists are honored every year. A self-application is not foreseen. A changing group of renowned art historians, curators, writers and former prize-winners nominated the artists.

The name is program: Anonymous What A Woman derives from a line of the essay A room for herself by the British writer Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). The jury, which selects the award winners, is anonymous. The funds are provided by anonymous philanthropists who have a link to the UJA Federation of New York.
