Gjallarbrú

In Scandinavian mythology, Gjallarbrú is a bridge that allows to cross the river Gjöll in hell and that must be crossed to reach Hel, according to Gylfaginning. It is described as a bridge "covered with gleaming gold", which is mentioned principally in the story of Baldr, when Hermód is sent to reclaim the god of the land of the dead. When Hermód arrived at the bridge he was challenged by the giant Modgud who demanded that he say his name and that he was there, before letting it pass. John Lindow highlights the parallelism between Bifröst, "a bridge between the earth and the sky, or the earth and the world of the gods", and the Gjallarbrú bridge, "a bridge between the earth and the underworld, or the earth and the world of the dead.
