Federico Torrico
Federico Torrico Mendiburu (* Arequipa, 1830 - † Lima, 1879) was a Peruvian journalist and painter, renowned for his work as an art critic and journalist. Biography
Brother of Rufino Torrico, son of President Juan Crisóstomo Torrico and Maria Manuela de Mendiburu.
Among artists such as Luis Montero (1826-1869) and Francisco Laso (1828-1869), Torrico belonged to the generation of Republican painters, whose academic ambition guided them to genres of greater hierarchy; like painting of historical or biblical subject, but his work emphasized like critical of art and journalist, writing in its newspaper the Patria and in the Magazine of Lima. Besides being an early valorizer of the works of Laso, Montero and Merino, in 1860, he was director of the School of Arts and Trades of the Municipality (present, Institute Jose Pardo), that next to Leonardo Barbieri, the lack of formal arts education.
