Virtual tasting
Virtual tasting is an experience generated by a digital flavor simulator. In 2012, a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore developed a digital lollipop, an electronic device capable of transmitting to the tongue four sensations of flavor (salty, sour, sweet and bitter).
In 2016 the same team created a square with thermoelectric elements to simulate the sweet sensation of food through changes in temperature. If this system is implemented in cups or cups, it could make low-sugar drinks sweeter, helping people reduce sugar consumption.
A team from the University of Tokyo created a device that simulates the different textures of food through electricity. The device uses electrodes on the masseter muscle (a jaw muscle used to chew) and simulates the texture by changing the frequency of the muscle. For example a higher frequency simulates the hard texture of the food.
