The ninth state elections in Schleswig-Holstein were held on 29 April 1979. Prime Minister Gerhard Stoltenberg was reappointed for re-election. Results

Valid Votes: 1568833

The SPD was able to increase its result to 41.7 percent of the vote. The FDP (5.7 percent) and the SSW (1.4 percent) were represented. The CDU reached 48.3%, maintaining its majority. The Greens, who were the fourth force with 2.4%, were not represented.
