Gerd Greune


Gerd Greune (* 15 March 1949 in Hanover, Germany, 24 August 2012 in Hamburg, Germany) was a German peace activist and president of the Institute for International Assistance and Solidarity (IFIAS)

Originally, Gerd Greune studied to become a teacher, but soon became interested in politics. The right to a conscientious defense was the first political issue he dealt with, and in the following subjects such as the German and international peace movements or the deployment of nuclear weapons in Europe and nuclear weapons were generally added. He was a member of the German Peace-Society-Kriegswettbegner (DFG-VK). In 1979, Gerd Greune, co-founder of the European Bureau for Refugees in Brussels, was the umbrella organization for national associations of conscientious objectors in the European countries to promote the right to military service refusal, with the preparation or participation in war and other military activities, as a fundamental human right throughout Europe , He was formerly a member of the board of directors, and was Secretary General of the International Peace Office (IPB, Geneva) in 1979-1981, as well as co-chairman of the German Peace Society / , From 1986 to 1997 he worked as a consultant for Social Democratic politicians in Germany. In 1997, he founded IFIAS Brussels. He has worked for projects in different countries, the Western Balkans (1997-1999), Bulgaria (2005-2007), Syria (2005-2007), Palestine (2006-2008) and Belarus / Belarus 2011. Last, from 2008 to his death, he developed an Arab media internet network for IFIAS.

His special interests were human rights, freedom of the press, anti-rearmament and conflict resolution. As President of IFIAS, he represents the organization and, together with other directors, was responsible for various IFIAS projects. He worked as a consultant for European projects in Bonn and Brussels.
