Koch was born as a chemist's daughter in Berlin and was evacuated several times during World War II. In Stuttgart, she attended the Mörike-Gymnasium. Since her father had passed away early, she did not have any financial resources for studying and trained as a foreign language correspondent, working in Stuttgart and at MAN in Munich. In France she attended a one-year advanced training course at the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and began her study of German literature, French literature, history, social history and communication science at the Sorbonne. After the licence she worked from 1967 onwards at the university. She was promoted in 1973 and habilitated in 1981 with a work on the German press history at the University of Paris-Nanterre, where she now researched and taught as an official lecturer. From 1986 to 2000 she was the successor of Otto B. Roegele, chair of the Department of Communication Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.
