The second book of Don Silves de la Selva


The second book of Don Silves de la Selva is an Italian horse book, by Mambrino Roseo. It was first printed in Venice in 1568 by Michele Tramezzino. It is a continuation of the Spanish work Silves de la Selva by Pedro de Luján, twelfth book of the cycle of Amadís de Gaula.

The action of the book is interweaved between that of the Silves of the Luján Forest and that of the First Part of Esferamundi of Greece by the same Mambrino Roseo.

The book comprises 65 chapters, which tell of new adventures of Silves de la Selva. This part in a magic ship to rescue the young prince of Salacia. Defeat the giant Alfumicán and release from prison Elisena, princess of Traprobana; Liscardo, prince of Lycaonia, and Florenius, prince of Rome, son east of Florestan, descendant of the half brother homologous of Amadís of Gaul. In the jousts of the kingdom of Sicambria, Florenio falls in love with Oristela and Silves reencuentra to his beloved Pantasilea, while the loves of Elisena and Liscardo develop. Afterwards, the heroes defend the island of Traprobana from a corals and go to the kingdom of the Amazons, which has rebelled against the converted Pantasilea. There they intervene in the love between the prince of the Catay and the rider Orotea and defeat the rebellious Amazons, the king of Russia and the Sultan of Albarosana. Then they happily test the adventure of the Mount of Loyal Lovers. Silves is heading to fulfill his mission in Salacia, while the others return to their earth. Editions and continuations The work reached considerable popularity, being reprinted in Venice in 1581, 1592, 1607 and 1629. It was translated into French as the fifteenth book of the Amadisian series and published in 1577, and in 1590 appeared in German as fifteenth book of the so-called cycle of Amadis of France. In 1609 he appeared in Dutch.
