The Archbishop of Guatemala, Mariano Rossell y Arellano, consecrated him to the priest on September 21, 1958.

Pope John Paul II appointed him as auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Guatemala and titular bishop of Selemselae on 9 July 2004. The Archbishop of Guatemala, Rodolfo Cardinal Quezada Toruño, donated the bishop's ordination to him on 27 June of that year; Co-conspirators were Archbishop Bruno Musarò, Apostolic Nuncio in Guatemala, and Pablo Vizcaíno Prado, Bishop of Suchitepéquez-Retalhuleu.
