Edward Thomas O'Meara received the sacrament of priestly ordination on December 21, 1946.
On January 28, 1972, Pope Paul VI appointed him, to the titular bishop of Thisiduo and to the auxiliary bishop in Saint Louis. The Pope personally gave him the bishop's ordination on the 13th February of that year; The co-conquerors were the Archbishop of Utrecht, Bernard Jan Cardinal Alfrink, and the Archbishop of Armagh, William John Cardinal Conway.
