Zimmes

Room with honey

Zimmes (also Tzimmes or Tsimmes written, Yiddish צימעס) is a dish from Jewish cuisine. Carrots cut into small cubes or slices are cooked on a low flame or in the oven and seasoned with honey and spices like nutmeg or cinnamon. The addition of dried fruits such as plums or raisins is widespread. There are a variety of other varieties, including other vegetable varieties, sweet potatoes or pieces of meat. The finished room can be a full-fledged main dish in the form of a stew or casserole, but also a pure dish up to a kind of relish.

The court is particularly known and spread among Ashkenazi Jews, and is served mainly for the Jewish New Year's feast Rosh ha-Shana, which traditionally dominates sweet foods.

In terms of language, the word is probably related to the term snack. In the English language, there is the speech taken from the Yiddish to make a big tzimmes over something (meaning: "a giant theater to do something"); probably a humourous allusion to the fact that the considerable effort and the time needed to prepare the Court of First Instance leads to a comparatively unspectacular result.
