Veronica (name)

Veronica is a woman's name in Spanish, derived from the Greek Βερενίκη (Berenice), a Macedonian dialectal form of Φερενίκη (Ferenike), "bearer of victory." There is widespread, however, a popular medieval etymology which interprets the name as vera icon, "true image".

Christian tradition assigns this name to Saint Veronica, the woman who, during the Viacrucis, extended a veil to Christ to wipe away sweat and blood. According to tradition, the factions of the Redeemer were miraculously imprinted on the cloth.
