A member of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, he served as a strategist and head of military intelligence from 1972 to 1991. He was also a member of the Executive Committee from 1977 to 1994. During the independence, he commanded the Eritrean forces on various fronts, notably during the Battle of Massawa in 1972, the Barentu in 1987 and the siege of Asmara in 1991. After the fall of the city, he directed it the arrival of Issayas Afewerki. After the independence of Eritrea, he held several ministerial positions: Minister of Defense (1993-1994), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1994-1997), Minister of Marine Resources (1997-2001).
In September 2001, he was arrested along with other political figures who were members of an opposition group to President Afewerki. He is detained in a secret place for an indefinite period. Change the code
