Periphrasis (rhetoric)


Periphrasis is a rhetorical figure that consists of using more words than necessary to express an idea or concept.

Its function is to avoid a stereotyped or common expression using words that evoke it without expressly citing it. The periphrasis belongs to the group of thought figures, is one of the oblique figures consisting of indirectly designate a concept through a set of characteristics.
