José Elías Cury Lambraño


José Elías Cury Lambraño. Colombian politician, philologist, writer, philosopher, teacher and polyglot born in Corozal, Sucre, on March 24, 1924 and died on February 7, 2007 in the same city, dedicated for more than fifty years to the systematic study of spoken Spanish on the Colombian Caribbean coast, which he called "costeñol" (for being Spanish spoken on the coast) and elevated it to the category of dialect.

Political activity

As a politician, Master Cury had a particularly hectic life. He served as a councilor of Corozal for several periods, was president of the town hall of Corozal, deputy and president of the Departmental Assembly of the formerly called Bolivar grande (now Cordoba and Sucre), representative to the House and senator of the Republic for the department of Sucre . Tireless scholar of living and dead languages, "Pepe" Elías stood out not only for speaking English and French, but for his extensive knowledge of Latin and Greek, which he taught at different universities in Sucre. This extensive knowledge led him to the systematic and conscientious study of Spanish spoken on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, which he termed "costeñol", which elevated to the category of dialect with three essential characteristics: bifronte, bivalent and bidimensional.
