Franz Birkfellner began his career at the Judo Center Innsbruck. After his second place at the Austrian Championships 1997 he won his first title in the general class. In 2000 he celebrated his biggest success with third place in the European Championships and participating in the Olympic Games in Sydney. In 2007, he finished his seventh place with his best place at world championships in Rio de Janeiro. In the meantime, he won the Austrian Championship eight times and managed four wins at World Cup.
