Miramar (California)

Miramar is a high-rise suburb, about 30 km north of the Californian city of San Diego, (USA), and also the former location of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School ("Top Gun") Cruise. Edit UsageCode

Miramar is one of the world's largest military airfields (over 200,000 flights a year) with over 24,000 acres (97 km²).

In 1997 the Naval Air Station Miramar of the US Navy was taken over by the US Marine Corps and renamed Miramar Marine Corps Air Station (Miramar MCAS). The site on which the MCAS is located has been considered by the city of San Diego as a possible new location for the San Diego National Airport. However, the military-strategic considerations overemphasized the fact that Miramar plays an important role in national defense in the south-western part of the United States.

At the peak of the Top Gun training program the base was nicknamed "Fightertown U.S.A.". This name also appears in other films and series, In JAG - On behalf of the honor, Top Gun - They fear neither death nor devil or the feature film A question of honor.
