The DARPA Grand Challenge is a race of autonomous vehicles that must arrive from a point of the United States to another without human intervention and having only a list of intermediate points between the beginning of the circuit and the end. It is founded by DARPA, a research organization of the United States Department of Defense.

The first edition was held in 2004, in the Mojave Desert and no car was able to finish. In 2005 several vehicles were able to finish the circuit, being the equipment of Stanford the winner thanks to a technical mishap of the equipment of CMU. The next edition, known as the 2007 Urban Challenge, introduced an urban circuit in which participants must obey traffic rules and behave responsibly in the presence of traffic.
