Cobaltoterapia

Cobalt therapy is a medical therapy in which the radiation emitted by the cobalt-60 isotope is used as part of a treatment to control cancer cells. It is sometimes used as a palliative treatment (where cure is not possible and the goal is to control local damage or relief of cancer symptoms).

Cobalt therapy is commonly used for the treatment of malignant tumors (cancer) and can be used as primary therapy. It is also usual to combine cobalt therapy with surgery, chemotherapy or hormone therapy. The most common cancers can be treated with cobalt therapy.

Radiation therapy is commonly applied to the main body or nucleus of tumors. To protect healthy tissues from the effects of radiation (such as those on the skin or organs through which radiation must pass to reach the tumor site), radiation beams collimate and focus from different angles so that they converge in the tumor. This increases the radiation dose absorbed by the tumor compared to that absorbed by healthy tissue.
