36, Quai des Orfèvres, seen from the Seine

The 36th quai des Orfèvres is a building on the Île de la Cité on the left bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. The building houses, among others, the Regional Directorate of the Criminal Investigation Department, as well as the municipal police department.

The building was built between 1875 and 1880 according to the plans of architect Émile Jacques Gilbert and his son-in-law Arthur-Stanislaus Diet. The previous building fell victim to firefighters on May 24, 1871.

Many people are familiar with the building as a workplace for the Roman figure commissioner Maigret or the Prix du Quai des Orfèvres or the film 36, quai des Orfèvres (with Gérard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil).
