The Roman Missal in the 1962 edition with headings

The term rubrics is derived from the Latin word rubrum 'red' and refers to the Liturgy in the liturgical books. For a better distinction from the liturgical prayers and texts and for the emphasis, these are written in red color or printed.

The field of liturgical science, which deals with rubrics, is called rubrizistics or ceremonial doctrine.

Heading is also an old term for a heading written in red. Likewise, the initial letters of medieval manuscripts, written in red, are called rubrics. They served to decorate and structure the text (see: Rubrizierung).

The formalistic, most closely directed adherence to liturgical headings is also called rubrizism. Edit source text Edit source text Single-level Edit source text
