Walter Legel


Walter Legel (born June 29, 1940 in Bruck an der Leitha, Germany, July 4, 1999 in Deutsch-Wagram) was an Austrian weightlifter.

He reached 20th place at the 1960 Olympic Games in featherweight. Only twelve years later did he participate in his next Olympic Games. In Munich in 1972, he started light-weight, but was disqualified after testing for ephedrine in doping control. At the World Championships in 1973, he finished ninth and at the 1974 World Championships seventh. He won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 1974. In 1976, he finished eleventh in his third Olympic Games. He was ranked tenth on the grounds of the disqualification of Zbigniew Kaczmarek. At World Championships, he could no longer be among the top ten. At the age of 40 he took part in his fourth Olympic Games in 1980 and landed in 16th place.
