Church of Sant Esteve de les Pereres


The church of Sant Esteve de les Pereres, is located in the town of Les Pereres, belonging to the municipality of Fontanals de Cerdanya in the region of Baja Cerdanya (Spain). History

It is documented at the end of the tenth century in the act of consecration of the Seo of Urgel. It suffered, like almost all the churches of the zone, the sacking by the cátaras troops in the year 1198. It was abandoned after the damages suffered in 1936. The date of its construction dates back to the middle of the 12th century. In the walls of his ship clearly rows of opus spicatum up to a height of about 2.80 meters from this measurement the rows are of bigger stones, elongated and sensibly worked forming walls of 1.50 meters of thickness. Two round arches divide the nave into three sections.

In eighteenth century reforms, two side chapels were opened on both sides and a hole to put the old baptismal font.

The semicircular apse smaller than the nave has a narrow window worked roughly.

On the west façade it had a steeple of belfry of the same width, with two openings that was remodeled in the reform of the eighteenth century, when the entrance door to the same façade was also moved. Bibliography
