The Breteau index (IB) is a numerical value that defines the number of developing insects found in human dwellings by the amount of the total inspected. It is used in Brazil for the determination of mosquito infestation transmitting dengue.

It is a larval index. The correct determination requires a complete survey of all the containers in a premise that can do this type of enumeration. The data is used to determine the index of the house. Using the combination of the IB and the "house index", it is easy to determine if the problem is extensive within an area or focuses on housing.
