Marcelino Bascaran


Marcelino Bascaran Larreategui (? - 1952) was a Spanish socialist politician.

Marcellin Bascaran was a prominent Eibar politician in the first half of the 20th century. Worker gunman, of the so-called txisperuak, participated in the creation and management of cooperatives. Cofounder of the Socialist Group of Eibar towards 1898, and later of the UGT, was councilman of the municipal corporation eibarresa and deputy mayor of the same in 1919 and justice of peace in 1936. He was president organizer of the Metalworking Federation of Guipúzcoa and of the Board of Directors of the "Alfa" Cooperative from its founding in 1920 until 1936.

He received the nickname "Sumendixa", name of the village where he was born, in the Arrate valley, in Éibar. They called him the "lay priest" for being the person in charge of the ceremonies at civil funerals, a tradition followed by his son Benigno, also a prominent figure of Basque socialism and father of Aurora Bascaran, mayor of Éibar from 1987 to 1995, and senator by Guipúzcoa in 1989 by the PSE.

He was imprisoned in the Franco regime. He died on May 28, 1952.
