John Wilson (mathematician)


John Wilson (* 6 August 1741 in Applethwaite, Westmorland, † 18 October 1793 in Kendal, Westmorland) was a British mathematician and lawyer.

Wilson studied at Edward Waring in Cambridge and taught mathematics there from 1764 to 1766. According to him, Wilson's theorem is from the theory of numbers. In 1766 he began his legal career as a barrister. In 1783 he was elected a member of the Royal Society.
