Burning Treasure

The Treasure of Burn or Treasure of Badajoz or Treasure of Paris was a group of pieces of gold and precious stones reunited by the conqueror Gonzalo de Badajoz during one of the first tours of the Spaniards in Tierra Firme (Castile of the Gold or Panama ), between March and November 1515.

The treasure, a product of the plunder of indigenous tribes found in the Panamanian provinces of Colon, Panama, Coclé, Veraguas, Los Santos and Herrera, as well as the 400 men, women and children captured to serve as slaves, they were taken away again from the Spaniards by the cacique Paris after a confrontation in which a great part of the troops of Badajoz perished.

Later, Pedrarias Davila sent Gaspar de Espinosa another of his lieutenants, to recover the treasure, which he did successfully.

It was called Burning Treasure because it was allegedly deposited by the people of Paris in the mountains of Quema, well guarded. There Espinosa would have found it, who, on his return to the town of Santa Maria La Antigua del Darién in 1516, carried with him not only the treasure, which some historians evaluate in 80 thousand pesos of gold, but also, a crowd chained and moaning of about 2,000 people ready to be sold as slaves. Although the Spaniards directly in charge of rescuing such treasure denied it, it is very possible, according to Fray Bartolomé de las Casas in his Historia de Indias, that they use torture against the indigenous population to reach him in the then abrupt mountains of Burn.
