Riojano precastellano

Evolutions of Navarrese-Aragonese dialects.

Pre-Castellano riojano is the most western variety of Navarrese-Aragonese romance. It represents the evolution of Latin in La Rioja and in the north of present-day Soria. There is written testimony in the Emilian Glosas of the tenth century, and some medieval place names written in Latin texts.

The Emilianenses glosses do not represent the first Castilian texts, as was initially believed, since after more thorough studies it has been shown that they use Aragonese phonetic norms: done, very, get (ye), etc., and with the detail that when they were written La Rioja had not been annexed yet to the Kingdom of Castile, belonging to Navarre. Therefore, the text that appears in the Emilianenses Glosses is navarroaragonés in its riojana variety. According to the linguists Claudio García Turza and Miguel Ángel Muro, this speech has more characteristics that would unite it to the group of languages related to the Aragonese than to Castilian, besides possessing other characteristics coincident with the Leonese, traces euskéricos and many others that , because there are no coincidences, they are properly considered as Riojan. It would be one of the historical languages that would form part of the dialectal conglomerate that later would give place to the Castilian language.

After the incorporation to the Kingdom of Castile, La Rioja was castellanizó between the centuries XI and XIII. From this time the documentary collection called Book Becerro of the Monastery of Valvanera dates, that still has precastellanos characters, like article lo.

In spite of this castellanización, at the moment the characteristics of this language are conserved in the riojano dialect of Castilian. characteristics
